OSU Extension Montgomery County SNAP-Ed and 4-H programs came together to promote healthy lifestyles with Smoothie Bikes during Gem City Market’s Block Party. SNAP-Ed is working with GEM City Market, construction to be completed fall 2020, and will be teaching free nutrition classes. This time of year we fall victim to, what I term, holiday fever. Unlike spring fever, it is a shorter, much more expensive seasonal affliction lasting to January 2nd leaving you 10 pounds heavier and your wallet 10 pounds lighter. At some point, you realize you have acquired a poinsettia. While it is bright, beautiful, and festive during December, it quickly seems to wilt or drop leaves as soon as January begins.

Charlie Blumer, 4-H member in Oakwood SRO 4-H Club, reports that his two month experience with the Ohio 4-H/LABO Exchange was “life changing and amazing!” Charlie’s first month in Japan was spent with a host family in Tokyo. During that month, he went to Japanese school with other 4-H delegates from the US and Canada. In these classes he studied the Japanese language and took cultural classes.

The Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP) is a free nutrition education program targeting low income families with children. Grant funded through the USDA/NIFA, EFNEP has taught thousands of Montgomery County residents over the past 50 years. Our series of nine (90 minute) lessons concentrate on food safety, healthy eating, budgeting food dollars, and the importance of physical activity. Our classes include food tastings, cooking classes, class incentives, and a certificate of completion from The Ohio State University.
